Third phase of EU-China Managers Exchange and Training Programme (METP) kicks off. EU managers obtain opportunity to become qualified experts for Chinese market. Application phase for next intake ends on January 4.

The third phase of the EU-China Managers Exchange and Training Programme (METP) started last week in Beijing with an intercultural training gathering executives from EU countries and the People’s Republic of China. The programme kicks off while heads of state from Asia and Europe gather in the Chinese capital for the biannual ASEM summit on October 24 and 25.

“We are thrilled that this year’s METP intercultural training coincides with the ASEM summit. By investing in human resources development, METP plays an important part in enhancing EU-China relations – the programme is a great example of how lasting business relations between the EU and Asia can be built” stated Stefan Hell, METP Team Leader in Beijing.

The EU-financed ten month programme offers EU-based companies and especially SMEs the possibility to train their employees to become qualified experts for the Chinese market. Ideally, these experts will utilise their newly acquired skills and contacts needed to conduct business with China. The application period for METP’s 2009 programme started in summer.

Long-term objective of METP is to enhance the EU’s relationship with China in a sustainable fashion through exchange and economic cooperation. Besides the organisation of the whole stay, the EU will cover all tuition fees. METP will provide participants with a monthly living allowance (1.000 Euros). All graduates receive an official diploma signed by the EU Ambassador to China.

METP is a four-year initiative of the European Commission and the Chinese Government and is divided into four intakes, each lasting ten months. Application deadline for intake 4 is January 4, 2009. Applicants should have no or only very limited knowledge of Chinese language, should be between 26 and 40 years of age and must have a minimum of five years work experience. The candidates have to present a compelling business plan for their stay in China. Applicants who convince the European and Chinese selection jury of the feasibility of their business plan will obtain an invitation to a personal interview and assessment centre in Brussels or Beijing in 2009.

The EU-China Managers Exchange and Training Programme (METP) is a four-year intergovernmental cooperation project between the European Commission and the Government of the People's Republic of China. Placed within the dynamic context of continuously evolving relations between the EU and China, the non-profit programme is designed to enhance business expertise by developing European and Chinese human resources. METP aims to train and financially support internships for 200 Chinese managers in the EU and 200 European managers in China. The programme is implemented by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade from 2006 to 2010, and total funding from the EC and the Government of China is 23 million Euros.
